I went to a bookstore after dinner as usual. Like the day before yesterday, a black-colored brochure of the release of Harry Potter 7 was standing on every cafe table. And it was automatically linked with one of the questions I translated yesterday and also the mirror of erised in Sorcerer's stone. Why? Well... because the question was about what LBS would find in the mirror...because the mirror of desire is my most favorite part of Jowling's Harry Potter series...because I'd like to recall Dumbledore's lines, “It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts. You, who have never seen your family, see them standing around you. Ronald Weasley, who has always been overshadowed by his brothers, sees himself standing alone, the best of all of them. However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge nor truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.” and “The happiest man on earth would be able to use the Mirror of Erised like a normal mirror, that is, he would look into it and see himself exactly as he is.” Or, because I remembered that I lost the capture image of the very scene where Harry was sitting in front of the mirror, keeping internal dialogue with his deepest desire, that is, with his parents, and I wanted to get it again...........and, probably because, once again, I wonder and I fear if I would ever see something "clearly" when I stand in front of the mirror. why? because truly I don't know what, if any, I desire. On one side, I am glad for it because I get to know what makes me shameful and let me follow is not the people who have material and physical beauties, but the people who have moral virtues, and the latter may not have such a strong desire. Maybe they are far from longing for something whatever it is. But on the other side, I am not glad to find that I have little to speak of what desire I have and why, because it implies that I still don't know who I am.

LBS interview with DAUM-9

Q33. What would happen if Dr. An appears in White Power? I think the interactions between charismatic Dr. An and Dr. Jang would be really exciting to watch. Who do you think would be a winner?

A33. Then it would be more interesting although I couldn't watch White Power because of SGBDH shooting schedule.

Q34. who is your most memorable fan?

A34. one whom I wrote my autograph for. Probably by the end of 1998, a young woman, somewhere in early twenties, came up to me and gave ice cream when I was going to get on the car. I was shy to write my autography for her.

Q35. Seemingly, Bong-Lee (봉달희-이건욱) couple looks a better pair than Bong-An(봉달희-안중근). Have you ever been uncomfortable because of your height when you stand to act alongside Dal Hee?

A35. (laughs) It doesn't get on my nerves. I don't care it.

Q36. I found you put eye glasses without nose pads in the drama or photography. I am sure you have a big nose. Do you think your nose is attractive?

A36. I don't specially prefer the eyewear. It's a semi-rimless and has a great frame. I chose it because I liked the design.

Q37. I heard that you like 천하장사 소시지 as a snack (*http://pds.egloos.com/pds/1/200508/13/83/a0016483_23504572.jpg). why do you like it?
A37. Many fans visiting on the spot are giving it to me. I wondered why, and later found out that Bong-Gu in Oh! Brothers liked it. I guess they misunderstand as if I like it. But I am glad to have it anyhow.

Q28. when you look at yourself in the mirror, which part of your body do you think is great?

A28. I have a big nose. I occasionally hear people say so. Many people, in particular make-up artists, say lips are my great feature.

Q29. If a sequel or new season to SGBDH is considered, would you star in? (you should appear in!!!)

A29. I also look forward to seeing how Dr. An will look like as one or two years pass.

Q30. I heard that you decided to act Dr. An because the character was too attractive to be missed. What about in the movie? What was the role you didn't want to give up?

A30. Mr. Gam Sa Yong in Mr. Gam's Victory.

Q31. What is your most memorable line in SGBDH?

A31. "You musclehead!" Although it sounds like Dr. An is harsh, it also reveals his simple, rough, and straigtforward character. (*his character without color)

Q32. SGBDH gave you many nicknames. Which one do you like best?

A32. "Yelling Beomsu" and "Smiley Beomsu"!

Just two postscripts.

PS1: In this interview, LBS repeats that Dr. An never talks around. In other interviews, LBS said there is some similarity between Dr. An and him. I guess it is proabably one in that he himself said he is straitforward in the conversation and not good at flattering. Of course I think LBS is much milder and friendly.^^

Anyway, it reminded me of Shrek the third I saw yesterday. Why? Leaving all of my impressions behind, there were two scences I remembered. One is Paul McCartney and Wing's "Live and Let Die" sounded at frog king's funeral. And, the second is namely "Pinocchio's dilemma" If you see the movie, you will find what I am saying. I didn't see the trailers in advance so enjoyed the scence. In addition, pinocchio was one of a few of things in the movie surprising me. (one more? I was surprised to see donkey is so quiet (I mean, relatively). Anyway, I couldn't help laughing when Pinocchio talks at a loss 'where Shrek is' around.

PS2: I translated LBS greeting for his fans as "thank you for loving me" and Bon Jovi greeted me with exactly the same title at the moment.

I found an interesting question in someone's (a visitor to...yes, again...anne's blog^__^) blog.
The question was "What does the word '오피스텔' mean in Korean?" The blog owner said probably two words 'office' and 'hotel' are mixed up. I think her guess is right and want to add more to it.

1. 오피스텔 is not a Korean word. It is an loanword from English via Japan. So, 오피스텔 is a phonetic spelling of 'officetel'

2. However, there's no English word like officetel. The word is said to root in Engrish (i.e. Japlish). As the blog owner guessed, it is a mixed-up of 'office' and 'hotel' .

3. 오피스텔, also called as 아파텔 'apartel' (apartment+hotel) refers to a building targeting people whose life style does not require a clear distinction between living and work space.

4. News says 오피스텔 was first built in 1985 in Korea.

I think English is everywhere in Korea. But many English words used in Korean's everyday life are those affected by Japanese pronunciation or syntax. So, 오피스텔 case is not uncommon. For example, 에어콘 (air-con, improperly abbreviation of 'air-conditioner') and 애프터 서비스 (after-service. no word is matched. probably after sale service?) are those loanwords absorbed into Korea. Neither is a proper English word.

Here, my point is to think of one of the loanwords frequently found in Korean dramas with you, not to judge right/wrong about use of improperly mixed-up loandwords. Anyway, the comments of 오피스텔 interested me. I wonder whether or not/how much/how this kind of topic is discussed among Korean drama fans.

*I got this picture from an advertisement page of 'officetel'.

Q24. I heard you are well versed in cinema theory. Do you have any intention of film directing?
A24. I am afraid that my film would be a case why not everyone can be a director. That is if I would direct a film. Indeed, I was curious about it, so asked telzone users what they think if I make a debut as a film director. I experienced play directing in the college, and it had an attraction to me. I am a graduate student now and want to make a short film someday.

Q25. Surgeon Bong Dal Hee is your first TV drama in your 17 years career. Do you think your view on TV drama has been changed with a success of the drama? Aren't you going to appear in TV dramas again?
A25. I was never unmindful of TV drama. I've just invested more efforts in filiming. I think I discovered the merits of TV drama and extended acting genres. The days of filming SGBDH were very difficult. But I was not be excused myself. I am completely absorbed in acting. I wish I could sleep for 4 hours. I sleep only 30 minuetes or 1 hour a day to prepare my lines and camera rehearsal.

Q26. What's the scence of SGBHD you remember most?
A26. The scence blood squirting out due to blood vessel rupture (*it appears the operation of a HIV carrier in the episode 8). The episode was shooted in 강릉 (Kangnung), and it was a hard part to act. I was carefully acting the operation scene, and got "OK" sign at one time.

Q27. Any comment as Dr. An, not LBS for netizen and TV watchers?
A27. (yelling like Dr. An). Thank you all. Thank you for loving me although I am straightforward in talking and often yelling.

I had a trouble in translating question 19 because I think Dr. An and Bong's dialogue (known as Dr. An's confession scence in episode 12) can be properly understood when its underlying meaning is translated, and if it is the case, word-for-word metaphrasing is not a good choice.
Anyway, I was curious about how Dr.An's line is subtitled. Fortunately, I found a case from Anne's blog (yes, her blog is like a resource center for me^^). Here it is:

---------
AJG: Why are you looking at me like that?
BDH: If you are tired, I can see the patient myself (the MDRTB patient)
AJG: Who said that I am tired? What is it with you? I told younot to look at me like that!
BDH: It is the first time seeing Professor Lee’s wife sincethe incident after all these years
AJG: BONG DAL HEE! Are you making fun of me? Just because thatI like you, does not give you the right to make fun of me!

--------

I think it is well subtitled, but If I were a fan-subber, I would not choose 'make a fun of'. (however, I still believe all the audience got what Dr. An is talking about and why). He didn't want to reveal his mind to Dal Hee at that moment, but she didn't stop concerning him. It definetely made him upset, so he started yelling. It's an ironical yelling. He probably wants to make sure that it is his business.

So underlying speech is like this, "why keep worrying about me? do you think you read my mind? moreover, because I like you, do you think you can do and need to something for me at this moment? hey girl, get real!! I am 안중근. I don't need your advice at all, and it is not your business. don't forget it, okay?"

LBS interview with DAUM-6

Q19. I was attracted by 'confession scene' where you were yelling, "Bong Dal Hee, do I look stupid? Do you think you can arbitrarily say because I like you?" What is your vocal technique that lets us clearly hear you
even when you are screaming?

A19. I've been practicing abdominal breathing since collge. I've also trained staccato vocalization.

Q20. I heard that you lose your temper without suit. Specifically why do you love it like crazy?
A20. I don't think I've ever said that. (laugh) Actor should be worthy of his name. I think trying to look himself stylish is actor's special right. With a pair of suit, I feel like I am a gentleman and stylish. it's such a pleasant feeling.

Q21. what would you do if you were not acting?
A21. I've never thought that, but anyway I would have an art career.

Q22. You amuzed people on a TV show by calling stainless 스뎅 s-daeng (*japanese pronounciation of English word 스테인레스 'stainless'). I think your sense of humor is just as good as a comedian.
A22. I know what you mean. Yes. I called stainless 스뎅 on MBC TV show '동거동락'. I think humor has been in my life since early childhood.

Q23. Dear computer illterate Beomsu, when will you fix your computer? I miss your writing(*I want to read your posting at our fan cafe again).
A23. I agree with you. I am a computer illiterate. I let my computer as it stands for almost 2 years and I fixed it only recently. But I still have a trouble of computer virus. I am planning to leave a message at the cafe within days after the end of this drama.

Do you like jigsaw puzzle? I like it.
I got 1000 piece Ravensburger puzzle from my neighbor and happily spent a couple of hours to assemble it. The background scenery is Angel's bridge & St. Peters in Rome, and this is my first puzzle of nature scene. I used to choose animation character like snoopy.
When I was trying to remember some tips and techniques, (I didn't finish yet) Wallace and Gromit hit me. Especially, the scene in A Close Shave (1995) that Gromit was working on a jigsaw puzzle in jail. Gromit's face change was delicate. He was sadly assembling the puzzle at first, but when he put in the last piece, his face expressed a hope (and surprise) for escape because the completed puzzle showed a secret message that his friends would save him. I felt that the scene might be linked with the meaning of the fruits of 'piece by piece' and I liked it.

PS: Wallace and Gromit is really memorable to me. It was the first stop motion animation I saw, and the first film to show me that there is more than US (precisely speaking, Disney) clay animation. I didn't know what it is at that moment, but did feel that a very different sense of humor inhabits. (Later, I knew Wallace and Gromit is timeless British icon).

LBS interview with DAUM-5

Q15. In the drama, Dal Hee has serious cardiac problems. But she wishes to be a surgeon. If you were in her place, what would you do, keep going or give up?
A15. I would never hesitate to keep doing what I want.

Q16. The experience to act Dr. An might affect your perception of doctors. How do you think?
A16. Of course. It helped me free from my previous bias toward doctors that they are indifferent, cynical, and unfriendly. Although every occupation is valuable, I think the vocation of a doctor which is the only profession to deal with human life is noble and lofty. A doctor's practice has totally different consequence from a mechanic's auto repair. If a mechanic fails to fix, it may leave a flaw in the car, but if a doctor fails to remove a patien'ts defect, the patient may die. Shortly, doctor's practice is terribly hard and important.

Q17. Do you know you have great eyes? I really want to know if you knew it.
A17. I've never thought that before even though I ever thought that they are characteristic. My big and seemingly single but actually double eyelid eyes helped me free to show many different images, clever, innoncent, mean, eerie, comic and whatever. My eyes are a real treasure to me.

Q18. You are renowned for nice attitude. When do you get angry?
A18. When someone is lying. I can find that it is a lie so I'm not cheated. But I feel bad to see the person keep talking as if I'm never aware of his/her intention.

"people can occasionally take advantage of shortcuts in judgment to figure out dependably what they favor politically." ---Sniderman, Broday and Tetlock

I am not going to say something politically. I just wanted to quote this sentence when I saw Duelist (2005) and The Big Swindle (2003) respectively.
Why these two? You may remember that I said I was led to LBS forum by a LBS fan. Later, I knew that she is a great fan of Ha, Ji Won. too. As I am quite strange to the actress, I was curious about what my friend discovered from HJW's acting. And 형사(Duelist) directed by Lee, Myung Sae was the top recommended film. For the same reason, I was advised to see 범죄의 재구성(The Big Swindle) to feel the essence of Park, Shin Yang's acting (but I watched Lovers in Paris before). I may write a very short review of them when I go to the board next time because I know they will be happy to read it. But I can't write it now so leave very preliminary points instead.
(....To me, to write a review, however short or long it is, requires to clarify what points I want to discuss with. I believe that it always first comes to be a review worh its name....)

Here's some shortcuts to frame my future review. If I suggest evidence to support my arguments and examples to illustrate my feeling, I will show you my review. Otherwise, I will just chat about it. I like it, too.

General

1. Duelist (D) is ultimate abstract painting if the Big Swindle is figure painting

2. D seeks for the common or the form; BS for the uncommon or unexpected

3. D let me keep asking myself a lot of 'why', but it looked meaningless because it's not important to see D; BS let me ask myself little

4. D is genius but not clever; BS clever but not genius

5. D isn't cool; BS is cool

6. D makes me worry the director's next work with love; BS makes me wait the director's next work with love

Acting

LBS interview with DAUM-4

Q10. who suggested eye glasses and hairstyle nicknamed 'lego figure hairstyle' for you?

A 1o. I did. I wanted to find Dr. An's unique style and hoped to bring it into fashion.

Q11. Do you have celebrity friends who can stay up talking all night? I'd like to know who's your celebrity best friends.

A11. Yes I have. I had dinner with 이병헌, 송승헌, 임창정, 류승범, 신하균, 플라이투더스카이 환희, and 박수홍 to celebrate my birthday last Fall.

Q12. What is your most memorable film?

A12. Mr. Gam's Victory. Even though all of my works are dear to me, Mr. Gam's Vicotry is especially meaningful in that I played one-top title role in the film for the first time. I think Mr. Gam's Vicotry is highly esteemed, and I am proud of it.

Q13. Did you eat eggs for 'yelling beomsu'? (*there is a belief that eating raw eggs helps to be in a good voice) Do you receive a special care for your voice? I also want to know what kind of things you prepared to play Dr. An.

A13: I majored in theatre performance in the college and I received voice training well. I mean I am trained in acting. I observed doctors before shooting Surgeon Bong Dal Hee because I thought having a personal experience is the most important thing to be prepared. In my opinion, there's no difference bewteen a cook who is cooking at the kitchen and a doctor who is operating at the hospital because both are just their every day activities. I think it's imporant to observe everyday life.

Q14: if you were Dal Hee, which one would you choose, Dr. An or Dr. Lee?
A14. No matter what the write of the drama intended, I would consider who is the man I can count on. Lee is not perfect to be a lover because of his indecive manner. He is gentle because he is mild-mannered, and it can leave room for misunderstanding in some cases. Dr. Lee is a good man for sure, but I think Dr. An, although he is unfriendly and blunt, is the right guy whom Dal Hee can trust and rely on.

It was a long day.
I was about to write something about it at this anonymous space. But I wasn't because I know sometimes what is told is far from what it truly means. Sometimes it's better when everything is sunk below the reason, below my consciousness. So, instead of doing it, I changed the templete and the profile image. I didn't think it in advance, but I want to keep Mark Rothko.
This picture is the first profile image of this blog. I think blogspot blogging tool may well have both merits and shortcomings. No problem as long as this blog is quite (but I never want you to keep quiet here. anytime, any comment is welcome. if you want to stay calm, we understand each other. While it is under my management, sometimes I hope so too^^)

PS: One of my online friends, (I believe), Anne, gave me good orientation of soompi. I managed to register and was able to look at a few of forums. And I was lost. (so I felt bad to find search key didn't work at all) so many topics, so many pictures, so many visitors, and so many...popping in and out. I think it will definitely take time till I feel comfortable. anyway, it was a sort of new world I've never thought before. Of course, it gifted me a lot of questions, thoughts, and ideas. they are ranging from what's X question to a particular idea of what to do next. I appreciate anne.

PS2: When I saw the sample cover page of 100 day event book of DC beom su gallery, I recalled Rolling Stone magazine, followed by the Almost Famous (2000) where a teenager William writes a music column by request from Rolling Stone. And it made me move back in the fine days when I was just happy with friends who loved to talk about movie, music, and whatever with me.

PS3: I know I am not good at instant messaging. it's true that I don't like it, too. But I don't want to blush for my awkward writing, it's a good motivation to write carefully and correctly in English though. What am I talking about? Well, sorry to bother you I'm just kidding stuff. Just ignore me if you don't understand this part(^^). Anyhow, Spiritualized's song, Broken Heart hit me at the moment.

LBS interview with DAUM-3

Q7. I think you've acted for a long time. Can you tell me your philosophy on acting?

A7. I think anyone can act, but only some of them act well. There's a big difference between playing a role and doing it well. I want to act well. I don't want to neglect the importance of hardworking.

Q8. I think you are pondering on "what's next?" after Suregon Bong Dal Hee which marked a turning point in your acting career. I heard that you do not want to appear in the comedy movies for a while.

A8. You're right. I tried to get out of the streotyped images of me. I think I get a new perception after SGBDH. Thus, I don't want to move back (to the comedy) so quickly. I am happy to show you a different style in acting. By doing it, I believe I am creating my own way of performance, and it's my pleasure. Whenever I am on a work, I wish I can show you something different as much as I can even if it's not always possible. Anyway, I have no need to lose the new image of an intelligent profession as well as the nick 'yelling Dr. An'.

Q9. Not in a drama or movie, I want to see you somewhere else where we can feel you as you are. Do you want to appear in a variety show? if so, which program?

A9: I was on the TV shows in the past. It was fun and I enjoyed it. it was a good experience. But sometimes I hesitate because I am concerned whether it only highligts a particular characteristic of me(like humorous).

LBS interview with DAUM-2

1. I am not a bilingual, but I liked to translate English texts that I loved to read into Korean. I keep doing that not only for fun but also for academic purposes. About the translation, what I was taught, advised, and trained is a metaphrase (i.e. translating literally or a word-for-ward translation). In some cases, I was not allowed/expected to translate orignial text freely.

2. Since I began this blog, (it's like 'learning by doing') I found two things to think of: (1) Kor->Eng translation is definitely harder than Eng-Kor. (^^) and (2) whatever I do, it's harder to translate when there are ambiguous points in the orignial text.

3. With a combined reason of 1 and 2, Daum star interview is harder to translate than my first work. Some of the questions and answers sound unclear so I am not sure what they are really asking/talking. Not a big problem, but it's anyhow difficult to translate because I am still trying metatranslation (or metaphrase).

4. Free to let me know if you find something hard to read.
=======

Q4. Which type do you think is similar to your actual personality, mild/warm-hearted 이건욱 or blunt/straight 안중근?

A4. I think both reflect 'who am I?' in reality. I am subjective and also receptive. I am not indicisive like 이건욱, but don't make an arbitrary decision like 안중근, either. Please don't misunderstand me!

Q5. Please tell me the greatest moment you had since the start of your acting career. If something bad happened to you, tell me that, too.

A5. It's really good to know I am praised for what I can do well. When I see people applaud me for my acting, it makes me feel so good however hardworking I did. I am still uncomfortable at a public bathhouse or public restroom.

Q6. Is there any role that you are ambitious to act? Is there someone you wish to co-star?

A6: I have a desire to act in more genres. I am working hard to come true it.I am very interested in a stylish action spectacle movie or a merry heart, a gentle melodrama.
I want to fim with the great character actors such as 최민식, 송강호, 설경구. I think melo movies or TV drama may be the case that I can think of an actress as my acting partner. well, don't you think it's hard to say because there are so many good actresses to choose?

My second project is to translate DAUM star interview with LBS released in March, 2007. LBS answered to 50 questions, which were selected out of the portal users’ question list.
Hope you like this project.

(Please do not quote without permission. But it should be okay if you suggest both the text I will translate and the permlink)

Q1. I heard that you like to travel alone. Please recommend a place which was memorable to you for me. I will try to go there.

A1. I would like to recommend you to go Monument Valley, Arizona, which often appears in Western movies and has a glory of the sunset. I saw the horizon at the valley for the first time, and it was just spectacular. Among domestic places, I recommend 불국사 (Pulguksa) and 설악산 (Mt. Sorak). I want to revisit the two places where I went for school field trips and have time to appreciate historical monuments.

Q2. When being asked to pick some interesting movies, I refer to those you appeared. What are the movies that you enjoyed?

A2. I like ‘Godfather’ and ‘Once upon a time in America’. I also like the movies directed by 봉준호, 김지운, 류승완, 이창동, and 송해성.

Q3. You are famous for your preference of coffee served at take-out coffee shops. Which coffee is your favorite?
A3. I drink coffee instead of smoking. I like to go a take-out coffee shop because the place is comfy and coffee itself tastes good. Americano which is not thick or foamy is my favorite.

--

-the title of this picture is 'sunset over Mouumnet Valley' it looks wonderful...

-Beom Su's first answer reminded me of movie Ariszona Dream. I loved the O.S.T featured by Iggy Pop. Hope you enjoy it, too.

I had a good time at DC Beom su gallery today. But I was sad to see 범수천국 who led me to the forum and always welcomed me leave the gallery for a while. But I am happy if it is a better choice for her, which will make her happier and healthier. I wish her good luck and hope to see her again soon. 20. Awards

A few weeks ago, a LBS fan opened an English version wiki page of LBS. With her contribution, we can see easily his filmography there. A few of his works such as Jungle Juice are missing, but it’s not a big deal. The list includes almost all important works he appeared in.

I suggest a Korean web page of his filmography, too. 32 works are sorted by year.

I talked to the fan, Anne, at DC gallery for a couple of times. Some of our topics are relevant for his filmography. So, for future reference, I linked two postings. I promised her to update his wiki page, but didn’t do that yet.

PS: To me, City of Violence (짝패), Mr. Gam’s Victory (슈퍼스타 감사용), and Forbidden Quest (음란서생) are the top three movies where LBS’ acting was sparkling. His performance in Au Revoir, UFO (안녕 UFO)and Wet dreams (몽정기) is also highly attractive to me.

He was named a public representative for Choon-Sa Film Festival in 2006. His latest commitment to the public was a voluntary participation in ‘DonersCamp’. CJ foundation initiated a fundraising event to support educating the children and youth with financial difficulties. Not only involving as a main model for the camp, LBS also agreed to participate one of the event's special projects, called ‘time donation’. Thus, on May 3, LBS had a meaningful time with 18 kids from a study facility.

PS: I think the violation of the ‘right of publicity’ in the media is serious. I wonder if the kids would feel good if their faces as the donee are released on line without permission. I was glad to see LBS, but unhappy about that.

LBS contracted with a new management company, MNET, at the end of the year 2006. SIDUS HQ, which is often called as SAMSUNG in entertainment industry or a giant, was his ex-partner.

It may be a truism that no record lasts forever. But it is obviously true that SIDUS has an enormous influence on entertainment industry as a film producer, distributor, star manager, and program director. I think SIDUS HQ is the best example to show what an actor/actress has been doing is inseparable from under which management company she/he is.

LBS worked with SIDUS for 6 years. Few news or gossip is available about how their teamwork was and exactly why LBS rejected the renewal of contract. Here's my guess: LBS might want a different spirit of entertaining, being able to suggest him a new vision because he wanted to break out of the fixed images as a comic actor. And MNET could offer him a better roadmap. As a result, a new partnership was made. News says LBS was offered the best conditions for the contract by MNET ENT. Besides, it was not only LBS not also Park, Shin-Yang(박신양) and 이미연 who left SIDUS HQ and began their own steps.

LBS played Dr. An in Surgeon Bong Dal Hee right after the new contract with MNET. I don’t know whether it was attributed to MNET or not though, his choice, consequentially, turned out to be very successful in that LBS opened a new phase of his career by the TV drama).

PS: I found a blog entry of the relationship between MNET and CJ. It writes as if MNET has recently been merged with CJ, but it’s not correct. MNET was established by CJ group as its branch. So CJ is a mother company of MNET. 김광수, known as his Midus Touch in music directing and producing, was one of the members who joined MNET at its beginning. News says MNET has increased its pie mostly in the music industry as an online music channel. As CJ group announced that MNET media would become a hub for extending CJ's influence on the entertainment industry, MNEt has experienced some changes toward a total entertainment company. Increasing agency project for TV stars and film celebrities and being merged with CJ MEDIA may be the examples.

effeuiller la marguerite...

On my way home, I found some beautifully white daisies. While I didn't do the game, 'he loves me, he loves me not', the small flowers reminded me that my head was full of 'do or do not, this or that, or now or later' stuff. It appears that practical wisdom means excellence in deliberation and decision making, and the virtue is for people with prudence. Yes, it seems always true.

I planned to complete this commentary version profile before May 20, the deadline for 100 day event, an event for celebrating the birth of Beom Su gallery at DC. I wanted to prepare a small present for the people I met there. Also, I wanted to initiate a baby step to search out which one would be good for me as a fan of LBS to make a contribution. For some reason, I do not spend long time on the web space.
There was no problem until I discovered DC galleries (one is for the drama Dr. Bong Dal Hee and the other is for Beom Su, Lee). I know time passes much more quickly when I am doing all of 'writing a posting, waiting a response, and leaving some comments on it' than just reading. But, anyway, I found myself feeling sorry(or regret) about the time limit I set as a principle. It made me feel bad. I was sorry that I am feeling sorry. As I didn’t want to do anything with such feeling, and I didn’t want to betray my principle that I had made for helping me, I decided to quit visiting the galleries and started to do this instead. Even though most of the entries are far from my blueprint and rather close to the scribbles, I enjoyed a quiet revisiting of his profile. I feel good and that’s enough. So this is a present for me, too.

After adding one or two comments on current version profile, I will go to the gallery (probably next week?) and let them know what I have been doing.

* Please free to leave a message if there’s a specific issue you want to know about LBS. As mentioned, I may translate 50Q&A next, but nothing is determined yet.

extended profile-12-17

12. Hobbies

As the profile displays, LBS enjoys swimming, weigh training, and singing in his spare time. If my memory is correct, he prefers soccer to baseball or basketball. Besides, he was once a figure-skating player in his childhood.

13. Motto

The profile I refer to translated his motto into English as ‘be strong to the strong, be weak to the weak’. It looks well-translated and I just want to add some. If I correctly understand, the sentence implies that he is a man of principle. He appears to hate opportunism or meanness: being servile to the people with power/wealth, but harsh to the weak.

14. Phrase that wants to be engraved on his tombstone

I want to translate what he said like this: 'a guy who was passionate and always did his best in life’ And this reminds me of movie 'Godfather'.

Regarding the rest of the items in the profile, I am afraid I cannot do anything more. If I would watch some TV shows LBS appeared, then I might find something interesting.

15. Celebrities friends

I didn’t find news article of his thoughts on friendship except a list of celebrities’ names (차승원 김승우 장동건 임창정 이병헌 장혁 유오성 송승헌 권상우 유재석 이휘재 김성수). I saw LBS and Byeong Heon, Lee (이병헌) talking at BaekSang award. They looked close each other and that’s all I know. Some people gossiped that it might not be a coincidence that the movie Dr. Bong and Dr. An watched together was what his friend Im, changjeong (임창정) starred in, but who knows.

16. Drinking amount

The data of alcohol consumption says that more than 50% men aged 20 and over drink ½-1 bottle of soju. So, LBS (2/3 bottle of soju) appears to be within the average range.

17. Stop smoking

He quit smoking on April 19, 2002. It was just too common that a guy in pain or distress is smoking on TV, but now smoking on TV programs is banned. It’s helpful to keep him smoking free, I believe.

18. Pet

He doesn’t have any brothers and sisters. Simba is a golden retriever and has lived with LBS' family since he/she was 1 month old.

10/11. Personality in general

Whenever being asked what kind of personality she/he has, I feel like to ask “how much exclusive do you assume it must be?” in turn. Because the question appears to expect me to pick up a single, exclusive personality to fit her/him. However, I believe that such thing does never exist. I prefer asking/being asked “Do you think her/his personality characteristics are well-balanced?” something like that. Thus, I want to make sure that I am going to suggest some keywords to describe, not define his personalty.

(1) I have felt LBS an ‘extrovert’. To make my feelings more communicable, I refer to a list of personality types (URL is below). I copied some of the descriptions appropriate for him.

Maybe LBS is a(an):

Doer: ESTPs are outgoing, straight-shooting types. ESTPs are "doers" who live in the world of action. They have a strong flair for drama and style. They're usually very good at story telling and improvising. They typically make things up as they go along, rather than following a plan. They love to have fun, and are fun people to be around.

Inspirer: ENFPs are warm, enthusiastic people, typically very bright and full of potential. They love life, seeing it as a special gift, and strive to make the most out of it. An ENFP needs to feel that they are living their lives as their true Self, walking in step with what they believe is right. ENFPs are basically happy people.

Executive: ENTJs are natural born leaders. As Extroverts, they're energized and stimulated primarily externally. There's nothing more enjoyable and satisfying to the ENTJ than having a lively, challenging conversation. The are assertive, innovative, long-range thinkers with an excellent ability to translate theories and possibilities into solid plans of action. They are usually tremendously forceful personalities, and have the tools to accomplish whatever goals they set out for.

(2) I think ‘optimistic,’ which excludes all of dull or purely negative personality characeristics, may be the best word to decode LBS .

(3)His characteristics are ‘well-balanced’. He is humorous and cautious. If self-realization or self-pride has a name, its’ his name. But he is never considered to be self-central or egoistic. LBS impressed people by his charismatic and strong personality, but being loved by his social, nice, and modest attitude toward others. He is the person who knows how to care others. His well-balanced character makes me feel he is special.

(4) The profile that I am looking at says LBS considers his strong will to achieve goals as good traits; reluctance to compromise as bad traits. And I think both appear to be associated with ‘straightforward,’ the quality of character LBS himself chose to define his personality. I guess LBS hates to compromise and tell a lie (in an interview, he tells that he hates telling a lie the most) as he is straightforward. As he is decisive and self-determined, he can focus on goal achievement.

(5) According to the people who have ever co-worked with LBS, he is such a ‘perfectionist’ They remember that he thoroughly reads the scripts and insists on shooting until he is satisfied himself with his acting. He does everything very carefully and tries to be attentive as much as he can in the preparation for acting.

(6) Finally, LBS is known not only as a leader but also as a ‘caregiver’. As well known, he is humorous. His great sense of humor helps to dispel stress on the spot. Shu Qi (서기) tells a story. She said she didn’t feel at ease for a while because of language problem. At that time, LBS approached to her and taught how to speak Korean. She learned some such as “Bag it! (or stop talking! It’s too noisy) (시끄러워!) and Come on! (이리로 와!), which actually the only expressions she could speak in Korean. She wanted to thank LBS for helping her break the ice, saying “he cared me like my older brother.” It’s exactly same story as 옥주현 Ok Ju Hyun commented at the press premiere in March.

8. Favorite directors

He mentioned Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as favorite movie directors. His answer surprised me a little bit in that I thought they are much more famous as actors than as directors. Further, in case of DeNiro, while his debut as a movie director was made in 1993, it was not until the 2006 film Good Shepherd (2006), his third work, that elevated him as a notable director. (but I think Al Pacino is relatively well known as a director and producer as well as an actor).

Besides, in March, 2007, LBS once asked DAUM users how they think just in case he would direct a film. The question reminded me of the movie, Very Good, a short film for his graduation. While it was interesting, it was too abstract and dense to be communicable (haha). Anyway, we may witness the moment that LBS is recording Director’s commentary someday.

9. Favorite actors

He suggested Alan Parker, An, Seong Gi (안성기) and Gary Oldman as his favorite actors. Again, I was surprised to find that the profile said as if he considered Alan Parker as an actor. As far as I know, however, sir Parker is a renowned director. The movies directed by him such as Birdy, the Wall (Pink Floyd’s the Wall), and Midnight Express affected me; I have no idea when and what kind of movie Parker appeared in. I strongly suspect there might be something mixed-up between 8 and 9 items.

News says 허장강(Heo, Jang Gang), a legendary Korean actor affects LBS deeply. In an interview, LBS says he respects Heo and can still recall having met Heo on TV screen when he was young. Heo always demonstrated different acting by different character, ranging from a gangster to a nice neighbor. The memory of Heo’s performance made LBS sense what a drama actor is. LBS even tells that it is one of two crucial moments reflecting his perception of acting.

I added his ‘love to do list’ to ‘favorites’ item.

Being photographed

He had an interview as the presentation of ‘Oh! Brothers’ was near at hand. While commenting that actors did not always like being photographed, the interviewee asked LBS how he felt. His answer was clear. “I like being photographed. More precisely speaking, I am trying to enjoy this work. Standing to pose for a photograph itself is new. Whereas performing in a film is acting, performing for a photograph is expressing something in stillness. The difference between the two is interesting to me.”

Sing a song

Q: What do you do well besides acting?
A: I like to sing a song

Korean food

I think his profiles available online are quite overlapped. Anyway, I found something unclear in one of them. It says he seemed to say “I like Korean food and I don’t like to recall food names.” He might mean that it is Korean food not others that he likes to have, but it is also possible that he just mentioned Korean food because he was not able to recall some foods he enjoyed. Then he may like foods with different cultural origins, too. Thus, even though nothing is wrong in the translation, it’s still unclear exactly what he was talking about. It might be taken away from the content.

Coffee

LBS is well known as a coffee lover. Americano served at Starbucks and/or Coffeebean is the coffee lover’s coffee. Once he mentioned that he likes it because it’s not expensive. It made his fans a little bit confused because Starbucks coffee is generally considered to be quite expensive. I suspect he compared it with coffee served at a deluxe restaurant or hotel lounge café where he might often go for an interview or business talk.

I was glad to read his answer to the question, “What do you do when you are not in a good mood?” He said he would like to spend some time in reading a newspaper with a cup of coffee at a quite cafe in the morning.

7. Favorites

Yes, LBS likes clothes, accessories, and sunglasses. However, it’s so obvious that anyone can find it easily even if she/he is not his fan. So, it’s not interesting me. If the question asked him not only favorite material things but also favorite immaterial things or things ‘to do’, we could get some more to reveal his lovely character. I am just sorry about that.

Here are two quotations from an interview and an article that made me feel happy.

His favorites:

(1) “When the film I appeared is just about to end its presentation, I never miss going to a theater to watch it. To me, it’s the very moment of farewell to all of my efforts I have made since I got the scenario for the first time.”

(2) Q: What do you do if you have no shooting schedule?
A: Then I air myself while hanging around the neighborhood. I really love being well at ease.

PS: I once wrote, “I am truly happy to find LBS and I share these things.”

“A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.”

This quote sounded good today. I hope my blog to be like the song in the sentence. I wish I am helping you find the words to feel him. I also wish you are helping me keep curious to know another language to share thoughts and feelings.

I didn’t add this blog to the blogger list and didn’t allow blog feed, either. I just wanted to let this space quiet for a while. So, even though I have no idea who you are, I probably know where you are. Thank you all for reading me.

6. Education

As mentioned, Beom Su was born and raised in Cheongju province. So, it was not until he became an undergraduate student that he left his hometown. People say that LBS went to good schools and I think so, too. News gives two stories of why he decided to be an actor. Firstly, LBS said one of his friends encouraged him to consider an application for the department of Drama & Cinema. He seemed to never think that before because he assumed only people with a career as a child actor/actress to go to the school. ‘With a little help from my friends’, LBS somehow chose to take ‘the long and winding road’ for being an actor.

Secondly, he initially intended to go to military academy to be a solider like his father. Indeed he applied for it, but for some reason he was not accepted (it is said that an applicant must not have any kind of scar in the body and it was probably a reason why he was rejected. But there’s no evidence to prove this statement.). And then he was thinking of being an actor and finally got an admission from Chung-Ang University in 1988.
More importantly, there is something underlying the second story. And it shows that it was his inner voice that really led him to decide to become a drama actor, I think. I combined some pieces of his interviews to present his thoughts on this issue. LBS said, "to be a professional solider and to be an actor are two ends but both are far from normal life. So, they are not too much different to me. I think I was rather fascinated with the military uniform. I always hoped to be masculine and be out of the ordinary in my youth. I didn’t want to be congested in life, but explore it." Given this, his final decision to learn acting in the college and be a drama actor was perfect. I cannot think otherwise.

His school is known as one of the top theatre and cinema teaching programs in Korea. And I think he must be proud of it. Most of all, the four year program in the college appeared to gift him 'pleasure of acting'. LBS confessed that he was so engrossed in performance that appeared in 26 plays for 4 years; others were busy in traveling, skiing, and whatever. He played Hamlet at the sophomore year and it made him famous in school because Hamlet, a core character of classic drama/tragedy, was generally supposed to be played by a senior. He must be an ardent and outstanding student! Second, in an interview with Dramatique, he said his self-confidence as an actor was formed from all of the experiences in his college program. It’s meaningful because I feel Beom Su’s self-pride the very quality that made him optimistc, powerful, and constantly unique during the past 16 years.

5. Height/Weight

(2) Weight

LBS was hardly gossiped about a quick weight loss/gain. It's good for him/me because endangering health is not worth it, I think.
His weight appeared to be mentioned for the first time in the news releases of 'Short time' (이대로, 죽을 순 없다, 2005). He lost 5 kg (11 lbs) by weight training and it was for playing his title role 이대로, a cop who is cheap, crazy about money and almost always slacks off at work.
In 2006, his weight hit record high in Mission Sex Control (잘 살아보세, 2006). Some news said 이범수 fatten up body weight up to 72kg (158.4 lbs) in order to perform an easygoing rustic 석구. It must be a quick weight gain because he gained 7kg(15.4 lbs) only in 5 weeks. Then, for exactly the same reason but in the opposite direction, he reduced 9 kg (19.8lbs) in 8 weeks when he starred in 'My wife is a gangster 3' (조폭마누라 3, 2006). LBS seemed to assume the movie to move faster than the previous works such as Forbidden Quest (음란서생, 2006) and have entertaining action spectacle. So, he might define 기철 as a slim and swift guy. Besides, LBS said that swimming and weight training contributed to such quick weight loss.

5. Height/Weight

(1) Height

In March 2007, he had an interview with DAUM. It was 50Q&50A format and the final 50 questions were selected out of those that DAUM users made. I think one of them shows how he feels about his height well.

A user said:

이건욱/봉달희 seemed a better-looking couple than 안중근/봉달희" (*the user seemed to believe that it would look better when a hero is taller than a heroin). And then asked if LBS has ever felt uncomfortable (or inconvenience) because of his height when he were standing to perform alongside 이요원(Dr. Bong).

Simply and clearly, LBS said:
He didn't get such a feeling (he didn't care his height or it didn't affect him).
Simply and clearly, I think:
He, that is the way he thinks, is right!
Perhaps I would translate this interview into English as the second project.

extended profile-4

4. Blood type

Beom Su belongs to blood type AB group. I think there might be an association between blood type and personality, but don't think the belief of the blood type/personality connection is a good way to find out personality.
I have no idea if other LBS fans are thinking what I am thinking though, it appears that they do not show much intereset in his blood type. I found no gossip/news as to his blood type/personality connection. It's good for me then because I don't have to speak in defense of uselessness of such belief.

Extra work: According to a part of the description of male + someone's only son+blood type AB, LBS is 'supposed to be' an individualist and realist who characterisically avoides conflicts, thus does not take a high-handed attitude; a person who is always gentle and attentive to other people; with parents' love being exclusively upon him, never loses self-pride. we will see if this kind of description is consistent with Beom Su's self-perception of his personality.

3. Place of Birth

Sometimes a fact implies more than what it literally displays.

His profile says LBS was born and grown up in 청주 (Cheongju), one of the cities in 충청도 (Chungcheong-do or Chungcheong province). There is unique Chongcheong accent, which is slower than standard Seoul accent and milder (or gently sounded) than other local accents. (Here, I assume the accent of the local dialects as the relative length/rhythm of Korean speaking)

What is interesting is that:(1) the accent still hangs on LBS speaking even though it is not strong enough to give away his hometown immediately and (2) his accent was benefical for his performance in some cases.

'City of Violence' (짝패, 2006), the movie which awarded him Best Supporting Actor, is a good example. It is an interesting story behind the scene that the director 류승완 and two main actors (정두홍/이범수) are all from Chungcheong province. In an interview, the director 류승완 said Pil-Ho's ChungCheong accent was the finishing touch for the movie.

He continued to say:

Given the assumption that LBS was about to perform Pil-Ho, I began to consider how to animate Pil-Ho. I had a close conversation with LBS quite often. He was trying to break from the fixed images on him gained from the previous works at that time. With the talks, I got some insights from LBS speaking with Chungcheong accent that I knew well. I think LBS made the best of his accent in acting and it consequentially contributed to making Pil-Ho a distict, unforgettable bad man.

Critics also agree with the importance of use of Chungcheong accent in City of Violence. They acclaim that whenever LBS speaks with slow and gentle Chungcheong accents, it is ironically makes Pil-Ho's conduct extremely eerie and evil.

Mission Sex Control (잘 살아보세, 2006) is another case that LBS optimized his hometown accent for creating a nice but ignorant rustic, Seok Gu.

extended profile-1

Let's begin by looking up LBS profile I mentioned in the previous entry. I am going to comment on each item of it. My aim is not only to supplement current version, but also make it more entertaning and informative. Hope it works.

1. Name

By the guideline for Korean-Romanization, it is recommended that 이범수 is written as Lee, Beom Su in English. As the guideline is not a mandatory rule, his name is also known as Lee Bum Su or Lee Beom Soo. I guess that his biggest Korean fan club is named after his name because 범 in 이범수 is a word meaning a tiger (虎).

2. Date of Birth

There is a gap between his real and the registered birth date. In an interview with 'Cine21', LBS himself told the behind story as for his birth date.

He was born 11/25/69, which falls on 10/16/69 of the lunar calendar. He said he was a very weak newborn baby. So, his parents did not register the date immediately and waited for a while in order to confirm their only son should be fine. As a reult, his birth date was officially verified as 01/03/70.

His family seems to celebrate his birthday by lunar calendar. There is evidnce for it. In 2006, there was a surprise birthday (party) event for LBS at press preview of 'My Wife is a Gangster 3' It was the sixth of december and the date exactly falls on 10/16 of the lunar calendar.

Here's the English version profile of LBS.

What am I going to do to this blog?

1. I got this blog for recording news bites of Lee, Beom Su. Since I was impressed with performance of LBS, I've found that compared to Korean sites, which are dedicated to him, there are few, if any, such sites for his English speaking fans. I am hoping to spread his virtues as an actor and a person and also to advance my English writing, I expect this blog to serve two ends.

2. For visitors who love to read gossip, entries of this blog may not be fun because I am interested in his own as well as his significant others' views on his performance and life the most. Movie columns, interviews, and news articles will be targeted.

3. Format for my blog entries is like this: (1) Reference to orignial source of Korean text (2) English version translation of the excerpt (3) My Comment

4. Early project will be probably deal with 'old but important' news of him.

5. Please do not copy or quote without permission. However, it should be okay if you suggest a translated text and the permlink (or URL) of it.

6. As English is not my first language, I am still awkward in writing in English. Please free to correct/polish whatever I write. it will be a great help.

Good morning

I am going to write:

1. ground rules for this blog
2. wrap up basics of LBS
